Maria Klemperer-Johnson is the proprietor and principal contractor of Double Dog Timberworks.
A graduate of Stanford University, Maria moved to Ithaca to pursue a graduate degree at Cornell University. After several years, disillusioned with academia, she followed her heart and began working with wood. With some prior experience building furniture, she apprenticed with the Red Barn Cabinet Shop in Brooktondale, NY for 2 years, learning the ins and outs of joinery and European-style cabinet design and construction. Maria also spent two years in general home construction, working with John Golay Builders on several homes in the Ithaca area. In 2005, Maria and her husband designed and built their own off-the-grid timberframe and straw-bale home in Hector, NY, which has been featured on the Ithaca Green Building Alliance Green Buildings Tour every year since. At the same time, Double Dog Timberworks was born, focusing on timber frame construction. Maria worked in conjunction with Aaron Dennis of Tugleywood Timberframes building several houses in the Ithaca area, as well as other smaller projects locally and further afield.
In 2013 Double Dog Timberworks became Hammerstone School as Maria began teaching carpentry courses for women. The same quality of contracting work continues under the Hammerstone School name as Maria brings graduates of her courses through an apprenticeship program designed to continue their education with real work experience.
